Celebrating AAC Awareness Month at RCG: Empowering Every Voice
As October comes to a close, we are proud to reflect on a meaningful month of celebration, education, and advocacy during AAC Awareness Month. At RCG Behavioral Health Network, communication is at the heart of everything we do and AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) plays an essential role in helping our clients express their thoughts, build relationships, and participate fully in their world.
What Is AAC?
AAC includes any method of communication that supports or replaces speech when it’s not sufficient.
This can include:
- Gestures and sign language
- Picture boards or PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System)
- Communication apps on tablets
- Speech-generating devices
AAC is not “just a tool” it is a pathway to independence. It allows individuals to:
- Communicate wants and needs
- Share feelings and opinions
- Make choices and build self-advocacy
- Connect with family, therapists, teachers, and friends
AAC does not prevent speech—AAC supports speech. By giving a voice, AAC builds language, confidence, and connection.
Why AAC Matters at RCG
Throughout the month of October, our clinical teams highlighted stories of growth, demonstrated AAC strategies during sessions, and partnered with families to help them integrate AAC into daily routines. For many of our clients, AAC is not a backup, it is their voice. At RCG, we believe that communication is a human right. Every child deserves access to a system that helps them be heard, regardless of their speech ability.
This Month, We Celebrated:
Device training as we do all year long to empower families to use AAC at home
Therapy sessions centered around choice-making and self-expression
Shared successes showcasing clients using AAC to say their first words, greet others, and participate in group activities
The Impact of AAC: Beyond Words
AAC doesn’t just teach communication, it builds confidence, reduces frustration, and opens doors to learning and independence. When a child discovers a reliable way to express themselves, their whole world expands.
AAC is not about technology. It’s about access.
It’s about the joy on a child’s face when they are finally understood.
Our Commitment Continues
While AAC Awareness Month is celebrated in October, our commitment to empowering communicators is year-round. We will continue:
- Advocating for AAC access and education
- Partnering with families through training and support
- Individualizing communication plans for every client we serve
A Final Thought
AAC gives individuals the power to connect. It is not a last resort, it is a bridge to communication, dignity, and opportunity. Every voice matters. Every voice deserves to be heard. At RCG, we are proud to celebrate AAC this month and every month.
